Aloft Hotels

I am in mid travel on my way to Costa Rica. I had a forced layover in Denver, Colorado last night. So, I stayed at an "airport hotel" and I use that term loosely as the nearest hotel is 8 miles away. I jumped on the shuttle headed for the new brand - Aloft. I had heard the buzzy about this sleek modern hotel chain, but hadn't had the chance to see one yet. The shuttle approached the hotel circle filled with 5-6 standard looking hotels and then there was the Aloft. The hotel was rimmed with neon ligjts and a soft neon glow radiated from the lobby. I was now very curious about the inside. I walked into a sexy disco club style lobby. It was buzzing with chatter over drinks and games. The front desk was a small circular island called the Aloha desk. I was pleasantly surprises at the casual but friendly check-in service, which took all of 2 minutes. The lobby bar was inviting and the "food counter" is easy self serve but offers fresh hot choices.

Then, up the elevator to the 3rd floor where I entered my room. The rooms are very simple but very clearly stated in design. Alarge flat screen TV, an illuminated wall that allows light to penetrate the shower and bedroom, modren bath fixtures and trendy curtains instead of closet doors.

I liked this hotel for a short stay. Quick in and out and unexpected decor makes it a top choice for airport or short stay city hotels.

Is Mexico Safe?

You have no doubt heard of the recent news on Mexico. Scary headlines everywhere about violence and drug cartel gun fights. It is true. Mexico has drug gangs and violence. It is a huge country, like the Unites States, it has its violent areas and gang problems. It is NOT true that you should be afraid to visit Mexico. The tourist areas remain unaffected by the violence which is localized mostly on the boarder and the non tourist inland areas. Mexico remains the #1 tourist destination by American for many reasons and it will remain #1 beyond the bad and often inflated press. My advise to all my travelers is simple: make smart and safe choices just like you were in the States, do not leave your resorts at night, do not walk off of the resorts on non tourist roadways. There is no difference between safety in Mexico and a visit to Detroit or Compton USA. Use your head and keep yourself safe. I have 2 trips to Mexico planned over the next 2 months. I will still go and I will take my children. Mexico has a lot to offer: its beautiful beaches, rich culture, exciting excursions and friendly people. Travel now and travel often :)

Dreams Resort: Cancun, Mexico

While enjoying my last stay in Cancun, I seized the chance to swim with the dolphins at the Dreams Resort. This is a wonderful family resort with good restaurants, a peaceful spa, a suberb city location and surrounded by nice beaches. This is a great option for a Destination Wedding that includes families with children. The wedding gazebo is stunning on the bluff overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. A really really good time to be had!

Venice, Italy: Just something special

There is something about Venice. This 2000 year old city built on petrified wooden stilts, tall old buildings and narrow streets rule this unique city. It consists of just 118 small islands (city blocks) all joined by bridges that strecth over the 120 canals and no cars allowed. All transportation is bus city bus (a small ferry) or a water taxi. The doors of the homes and hotels open directly to the water to receive the visitors. It is unlike anything imaginable. Mystic in its long history and Venetian ways, but as the newest addition to Italy it is just 200 years old. I adored the historical sights, but must confess my favorite memories of this city are of walking through the narrow streets tasting all it has to offer: pizzeria, cafes, pasticceries (pastry shop) and gelato shops abound. If you ask directions to anywhere you will be politely told " go over 4 bridges, past 3 cafes, a pizzeria and 2 gelato shops on the left." All things measured by food and bridges, charming. But, if you feel lost just follow the signs to The Ferrovia "the train" (at the cities beginning) or the signs to St. Mark's Square "Piazzetta" (at the cities end). The signs will kindly lead you through the windy ways and over the bridges until you arrive back to your destination.

Dominican Republic: An Up and Coming Destination!

It's a long journey to reach some of the islands in the Caribbean. But, I must say the Dominican Republic is an island worth the trek. The Punta Cana area is an up and coming eco friendly tourist destination. The beaches are sugar white and the water is crystal clear. There are many fun tropical excursions to try like zip-lining, a jungle tour, visiting the coacoa farms as well as many water activities and the casinos. A highlight is swimming with the reef sharks, dolphin and rays. The infrastructure needs much work. The roads are rough and bumpy along the poverty stricten areas, but I have come to accept this as part of any island life. It doesn't seem to bother the locals, why should we be so bothered by it. The Dominicans are fun playful people that literally dance in the street or at least on the side walks. DR offers many beautiful resorts along the best beaches, but as with most areas now, beware of the time-share sells people. Always put a "Do not call" on your room reservation. Choose this island if you are a true beach lover and plan to spend most of your days at the resort. My #1 romantic pick is the Excellence Resort, wow!
